Great job on the headstock. I think that shapes would have given me nightmares trying to cut it, but it's come up a treat for you.

for me that is the best and most original headstock design I've seen...Scroll saw??
Looking forward to seeing this one progress.
Hi all,
Thanks for the feedback on the headstock, I'm very happy with. Credit must go to Jane who is something of an artist and has a good eye. Re the shaping, it was roughed out with a jig saw, enhanced with a file, and grafted into shape with some 80 sandpaper on a block gradually progressing to the 240 to finish. The tricky bit was the return at the top of the wave and I used a 6mm drill to land that shape before the sanding. As the gurus say, there is always a work around.
So another morning of sanding and it was time to apply the deep colour stain coat of the Azure lagoon. Whilst Winkipop is the name we're going with, Winki for short, this Tele could also have been named the thirsty camel. DB suggested that the first coat would be a soaker but its taken almost the whole bottle in one sitting and I get the sense that with a little rub with the steel wool it would happily take a second sip of this lovely colour.
Question to the gurus, based on the following snaps, do I need to order more deep colour stain coat for the patches? Or.. Will this even out as I apply the base coats to come?
Now the happy snaps. I must point out at this stage that the first coat of the wudtone has made another fanatic of the stuff. What it has done to bring out the timber's grain is amazing. I think that once it is evened out across the body, the depth of texture will be amazing. And this is all bass wood!![]()
Cheers

Beautiful colour. The depth really develops over the layers, so go with it. It also doesn't last (3 months shelf life), so there's no point in hanging on to it. First coats do take a bit, but later ones much less so...
Trick is entirely - don't rush things - the more care, the better the outcome... As far as ordering more stain - I don't think you'll need it. See how you go... if you do need it DB is very prompt with getting emergency supplies into the mail.

This is developing very nicely. Definitely one to watch over the next few weeks. I will also add my kudos on the headstock. Original and exciting.

Looking just as I envisaged- sumptuous!

Outside the box headstock - clever & thematic, I like it a lot.
I also liked the elegant lines of your first draft.
The woodgrain & colour is redolent of waves & eddies in the sea to great effect.
Will it be able to play Bombora?![]()
It might be able to but I don't know about the driver. If all else fails I'll play something I know at this place./<\\/p>[/<\\/p>[]<\\/p>/]<\\/p>/Quote from maxaxe on July 4, 2013, 19:44

Whack the gold highlights on it and a layer or two of the base coat! That is looking fantastic!
