I see some hollow body guitars listed above. Do the hollow bodies have a good sound without amp? And how do they change the overall sound compared to solid wood?

Yes mate, they sound very different. I've only finished the ES-1G (then refinished it) - still going on my PRS-1H. I put Tonerider humbucker sized P90's in the ES-1G but I think I will wind some proper PAF humbuckers as that's my preference. I think you get more of a raw throatier sound in the neck pickup with the semi-hollowbodies and the bridge is a bit edgier IMHO. The vibration of the semi-hollow body definitely feeds into the microphonics of the pickup to create that unique sound!

I try not to spend too much time thinking about that, because I'm trying to learn to play! And I'm finishing off my amp. And then I want to build a bigger amp, because I have this tube amp I built many, many years ago, but it needs a new preamp section. So in the end I plan to build something like a Fender Deluxe Reverb, with a cleaner 20 watt output stage. It will probably weigh 40 pounds when I finish!! But I keep eyeing the ES-3 and ES-5 models. They look like they could be really beautiful and have a really different sound. Temptation, temptation!
Guitar Kit Temptation? We know it well.Don't we @Andy40!

Hand crafting guitars, because Death Rays are expensive.
Welcome Roger. I'm in Glendale so that makes at least three Arizonans. I'm in the process of building an ES1F. I'm still working on the finish, but I bought Seth Lover 55 pick-ups.
And the doctor said "Give him jug band music; it seems to make him feel just fine..."
