Re the scratches; it may be you were moving up the grades too quickly, and not removing the marks from the previous grade's efforts. Were you using the micromesh wet or dry? For polishing paintwork, I'll always use it wet to avoid any clogging. Also they recommend not using any real force on micromesh as this negates the cushioning effect of the soft backing.

Simon, I think you are right. It was my first time using acrylic rattle cans and I honestly don't remember the sanding process it was so long ago.
