The problem has been solved. Rather brutally, but solved none the less. Half an hour with the random orbit sander and 80 grit sandpaper.![]()

so the veneer has gone Pabs, basswood doesn't look too bad.
Thought it would take about 2 mins with 80 grit orbital to remove the paper thin veneer
EDIT no worries Pabs I saw the original pic, then the new pic and revised my comment

Nice and even mate. Was worried it would be darker due to grain change but looks great
Thanks man. It actually ended up going on lighter, the above pic is after three coats whereas the original pic with the maple top is only one pass.

looks excellent Pabs, love the burnt orange look. Glad this build is back on track. Presume the headstock face will be the same colour and natural neck ?
