Hey Tony,
I would say the gold highlights you have would have gone off by now....
Will send you a sneak preview of DT gold highlighs, they will be more compatable with the DT afterall![]()
nice plans Tony. Sure the maple veneer will look cool with a step down. Looking forward to seeing progress Tony
@ DB agree wudtone highlights would be too old

Thanks for that DB. While we are the subject of gold highlights, don't know if my idea is feasible or not.
When grainfilling the ash most seem to use a dark timbermate to fill the grain and when sanded back make the ridging stand out more.
I was thinking of "golding" the grain, have no idea how I might accomplish that, but was hoping that could somehow apply gold highlights early/first in the process and then add the Karinji over the top, so while the grain ridge will darken with the stain it will somehow have a noticeable tinge of Gold in the ridges.
To do this I was thinking that might have to sand smooth as best as I can and not traditionally grainfill. Heavily use the gold highlights and then buff back with steel wool. Then the normal process of Dingotone application to completion.
Any suggestions?
Tony
So rough cut the outline and 85% shape of headstock before starting the routing of the step down with the trusty Ozito. Was a bit daunting and the depth is a little more than originally planned as the adjuster screws on the base come loose and the vibration altered the setting.
Tony
So once had the majority of the freehand route done as close to the line as possible, used a sharp chisel as a scraper pulling the back flat edge to slowing bring to the curve I was chasing. Then sand , sand, sand smooth and with a slightly rolled top edge. Am actually glad that its deeper as will give a good near 2mm step above veneer.
So now to try and cut some veneer to shape and then work out how to clamp. not sure whether to shape a clamp piece or try the iron method.
Tony
Cut a piece of maple veneer to the shape and to make look a little more seamless, undercut the edge so the veneer slipped under the raised section of headstock. So now is glued and clamped.
Tony
Looking great Tony! Love the step down in the headstock. Gonna look super-sweet when the finish goes on.
cheers,
Gav.
