It is a good idea to shield both.

There is always a workaround for glitches, mistakes and other Guitar building gremlins.....

The second one is not covered by a pick guard so would like some advice on how to get it looking good. Also any other upgrades that can be recommended?

Hi Tadeo nice progress the build coming along nicely. With the pickup cavity with no pickguard just copper shield the cavity to near the top but put the pickup in place to see how it looks. If there is too much copper visible then trim it back lower.
Popular upgrades for a JB would be a bone nut, bridge, tuners and pickups and active preamp but depends on your budget which I presume your Dad is helping you out

ID:	6185 A little off topic but dad and I just put our first coat of clear dingo tone on this 70 year old banjo we are restoring. Had to show it of as we think it looks great.

Since it is old and paired with a flamed maple, which is a medium density wood, it's most likely Mahogany.
