welcome to the forum RM, nice kit the EXA-1 I've built one.
What are your paint/stain plans for the build ?
start a build diary and ask any questions you have.
Be good to see some pics of the mock build to see what sort of grain you scored.
Are you a Rod Marsh fan as well ? Another brilliant cricketer from the West !

cheers, I got some of the Coolangata gold dingotone finish, and I reckon ill make up a black pickgaurd like on the Gibson style explorers.
Rod Marsh??? sorry mate not a big sport fan.
sorry RM, the Aussie wicket keeper Rod Marsh's nickname was Bacchus Marsh, I never knew there was a town called that !
No wonder he got his nickname.
If you are upgrading to a G type pickguard are you moving the switch to the lower horn ? You will need a switch cavity route and channel for the wiring

yeah ive thought about that but I wouldn't mind keeping it the way it is and simply having the pickgaurd without the switch, ive seen a video of james hetfield playing a really old ESP explorer like that and the guitarist from mastodon has his signature Gibson like that too, I would prefer the master volume opposed to independents, its not very common so I like it.
Welcome RMTrotter. I am also an Explorer fan currently building an EX-5 and awaiting arrival of an EX-1 kit that I was also going to do in Coolangatta Gold. Mine are both Basswood and therefore not too much difference in timber colour between the body and neck whereas an Ash body was tempting but may have produced a colour darker than the neck. Will be keen to see how yours comes along.

cheers mate wouldn't mind seeing how yours comes along too, I own a LTD FX-360, and its absolutely beautiful, mahogany neck and 5 piece mahogany/rosewood neck, although the guitar is coloured the same Paduak colour all over the shades of the wood is a little different and for some reason I think it looks great so im hoping for the same effect with the ash body.
was checkin out the EX-5 kit, that liitle bit more of a point on the headstock looks sweet, should turn out real nice.
cheers FretWorn, do you have pictures up on here of your Lapsteels? id love to see em.
Hi RM, if you are interested I built a lap steel over 3 years ago now, was my first job routing a control cavity. Was cut out of a big lump of jarrah and I used spare parts I had, the bridge was made out of an angle bracket with the string slots cut. I need to lower the bridge action but here's pics of it
