Not a problem at Woks. might take a little lateral thought. AAnd who wouldn't to build one of these.
Oh and yeah I am a ZZ-top fan

Well, the neck has arrived. Headstock is too thin to put the slot in so will still go with the overall shape but standard 3 a side tuners.
The headstock is 15mm wide, probably need a few more mm to be able to so a slotted headstock.
Cheers PK

thats a huge paddle headstock PK. What you need to find out of the treble side of the HS needs to be thicker to side mount the tuners, or if the whole HS is say about 16-18mm thick whether the bass side needs longer tuners for the extra width. Is it possible to glue a wedge shape so the treble side is thicker for the side mount tuners ? Find out how wide a Kluson type tuner is.
If Billy Gibbons plays this axe it's ultra cool

Hi Woks,
the headstock is 15mm thick. But I am pretty sure the one I had back in 1960 didn't have a thick headstock. so maybe a bit of head scratching and measuring. The biggest concer is drilling a hole for the shaft. a 10mm hole only leaves 2.5mm each side, an 8mm hole gains 1mm soa 3.5mm clearance. Not sure that would be enough. Probably should have gotten DB to make the neck
The 'Satan' that Billy owns was made by Cole-Clarke, it does have a thicker headstock on the trebbel side.

PK I think the only way to drill 10mm holes through the treble side is to have a thicker HS on the treble side. The chance of drilling through the sides are too high. I reckon a wedged shaped HS would be cool.
There may be a rectangular shape tuner that has a narrower shaft but worth doing research before you proceed

Hi Woks,
I have a pic of an original, the original headstocks were only 15-16mm they used open accoustic style tuners. mind the pic is of a bad restoration by some one with a can of spray paint. these tuners are only about 5mm(1/4in) dia, so would do the job. I do have a set, unfortunatley I need to file a mm off each side.

so PK if you can find the right tuners you shouldn't need any wedges or mods to the headstock thickness.
Agree not a very flat finish on the headstock face !

G'day PK,
If you have a look on google images you will see the Maton W has two different head stocks, the Satan stock and one that looks like a Strat headstock
Hi Gav,
I think that Fender headstock was a replacement. The thicker headstocks seem to have appeard on the series11 Wedgtail. I am damn sure my series 1 had a thin flat headstock. In any case I am probably going to struggle with this neck as it measures at around 14.5 - 15mm so may be just a touch too thin. Best I have been able to find so far has been 16mm tuners. Nickel plated from Tiawan $25 + $8 postage.
I did have a look at some maple Headstock Veneers but at 2-3 mm thick I thought they may be an issue for the tuner mounting screws, but I was thinking Klusons at that point. a 2-3 mm veneer would work with the nickel acoustic tuners.
Cheers PK
