Thanks wokka, i have been thinking about building a scratch guitar for about 6 months and had been watching a heap of youtube video's on how to do it so i had a fair idea on how i was going to build it. I was going to go a tru oil finish but im thinking i might try a wipe on poly, hopefully once i put the poly on i might darken it up a little.

Thanks for all the kind words, im having a blast building this guitar, makes the time at work go faster thinking about what my next step is on this project. i put another coat of stain on tonight but when i had a closer look i have left a fair few scratches in the body from when i was sanding. i have decided that before i go any further i am going to sand the stain back and sand it to a higher grit.
i only went to 180g last time so i'm thinking ill sand up to 400g. what grit do you guys sand to before stain?

Hey Farnzie, usually minimum 320 grit before staining. Don't go higher than 400 grit as it polishes the surface and the stain doesn't have much tooth to soak into
    Current Builds and status
scratch end grain pine tele - first clear coat on !
    JBA-4 - assembled - final tweaks
Telemonster double scale tele - finish tobacco burst on body and sand neck

    Completed builds

Truly amazing what you have accomplished so far farnzie. Great job.

I usually go to 400 grit but I imagine that is going a bit overboard. But I'm a bit anal that way. Whatever grit you go to make sure that you don't start to polish the wood as it will stop the stain from taking evenly.
