Thread: Tindrrel's JR-1M

    Tindrrel's JR-1M

Still working on my first PBG kit, but decided to run a couple of projects in parallel. Will have to see how that works out. So, a JR-1M (Jr-1dc). Might be slow progress, but hoping to get the mock build check done very soon.

    So, the unboxing.

I haven't quite decided what I'm going to do for the finish of this one.

Options I'm considering include clear coat the neck with no other stain, veneer the headstock to make the front black, swap out the pickup, pots and caps for upgrades.

Good stuff, looks great. These JR's are awesome kits. Mine has become my main go-to-axe, great fun to play. You've got some nice grain action going on with the fretboard and body looks good

So I got the body back from being routed yesterday.

I don't have a proper router, so I had this done.

The original bridge pickup route has been enlarged to take a soapbar P90 instead of the provided dogear.

A neck pickup route has been added.

I have a set of Orpheus '58 style P90 pickups made by local David Paul that I'll be installing.

nice one Sam. A Neck pickup will make this a unique Jr build and give you heaps more sounds.
Has the person thats done the routing drilled a hole from neck to bridge pup ? You will need a really long drill bit to do this if he hasn't. You might have to enlarge the hole from bridge pup cavity to control cavity to fit the extra wires. Are the pickups just a hot and earth wire or 4 wires (splittable) ?
Also you will need a switch so you may have to ditch the tone pot or make the cavity bigger for a switch?

Looking at the distance between the 2 holes you may fit a switch between them

The plan is to add a piece of wood at this point:

to create a smoother transition from the body to the neck.

I was inspecting this closer when I noticed this - no idea why I didn't notice when I originally unpacked it.

When the neck is in the pocket, and flush against the back, there is gap at the end.

This can't be pushed further into the pocket. The heel of the neck is angled - presumably to angle the neck back and lower the action. However, the pocket is at 90 degrees, this leaves a gap.

Should that be shaped so that it fits snug, or shimmed?

It seems that the glue would only be contacting wood to wood on three sides.
