For me it depends on the style I play. I use a lot in my 'rock' style which is basically psychedelic, grunge etc all melded together. Other styles I play require a lot less.
My SG holds so much sustain you can strum the open strings, go and make a cup of tea, come back, maybe drink it and it's still singing whereas my chicken picking teles do not.

Doco, yeah... haha. If you haven't seen it, I'd highly recommend 'A Mighty Wind' as well. Same guys give folk music the same treatment. Absolutely hilarious and once again, some fantastic music.
