Multiacs of that type have nylon strings, so you are right in that the tuners are probably unsuited.
However another option might be to put a steel tubing sleeve over the section where the strings wrap around, which would have less "give" than the standard setup. Also means you can reuse what you have.

Either way, looks like a really cool project.
