I clamp the headstock to the bench with quick release clamps when I do it , seems to work okay Just use cardboard in between your surfaces so as not to mark or dent anything

You don't necessarily need a jigsaw, this is all I use and the final result.

yeah i hacked out the shape real rough for mine with a coping saw, then rasped and sanded it to shape. takes a bit longer but saves buying a jigsaw if you dont have one already

I have cut out the head stock and really pleased with the result took all your suggestions and it worked out better than I thought

I have started sanding the body so I am on my way - still got more sanding to do

I am going to order the black stain because I think this will be better for the busrt

Thanks wokkaboy - I am wrapped with the result - not quite symetrical and a couple of little chips on the back but way better than I thought I could do!
I have already started sanding the cap but I wont sand anymore until I put the stain on it
I am going to end up with a black stain, nullabhor ochre and outback sunset - do you think I could blend the three colors?
And do you just put the black stain around the outer edges?
I am going to stain a test piece of wood with both or all stains so hopefully I will be able to answer my own questions
The cap has a couple of small dings in it but I think I will just leave them because I dont want to sand thru the cap!

Holy moly!!! You absolutely nailed it Al.
I tell you what, that's even better than a stock Gibson shape the way those wings flare up on the outside edge, I might have to steel that shape next time I do a 3x3:-)
