Ah I see! I've just checked out your Facebook page, looks good how you've taped up the flames. Also the pink dye on front looks great (I know you initially had some trouble sourcing something for this)
Yeah Andrew, weren't you the one that suggested the blog about rubbing raspberry juice on bare wood? I am going to have to try that one day ;-)
Anyway, here are some pictures of today's progress. Flames came out pretty kick-ass if you ask me (but I am biased of course). Just a bit darker than I had in mind. That's a waterbase magenta candy from AutoAir I used here. Underneath that some rootbeer and amber (also candies) and some transparent white in a transparent base to lighten it, then over reduced.
Looking very nice. Yes I suggested the raspberry! Moved on from that idea, had a play with it a bit of a disaster, smelt nice though!
What's going on with the flames there? Am I blind or did you scoop a bit of wood out to make them look 3D?
Looks great.
On another note I am honestly going to kill the person that glued the veneer to this body. After the first 2 coats of clear the wet sanding caused (yet again) the veneer to curl up, split and peel away from the body. This was in the same spot that I already glued back down using a syringe to get super-glue UNDER the veneer. So we are talking wood hardened by superglue on one side and a good coat of 2K clear on the other (yup, that's the same nasty stuff they use on cars). What the hell is going on here? It's not like I am wet sanding with a power washer!
Anyway, super-glued it down again... ready for another coat of clear
Love the flames, Jay ... lookin' very Hot-Rod! (all you'll need is a '35 Ford Coupe to match the axe!)
That's a real bugger about the veneer (it certainly doesn't like moisture, does it?) ... must have still had a pin-hole or something in the 2K coverage that's allowed some moisture to get through ... never an easy fix but sound's like you're on to it.
She's sure goin' to be one hot axe when you've finished ... (flames! - hot!... yup, bad joke!
)
Wait a minute ... that sounds like Rock and/or Roll!
SG-1 ... "Little Miss" finished in Flamenco Cherry Wudtone
TL-1A ... "Slugger" finished in Antique White Nitro
EX-1 ... "Metal God" finished in nickel-plate (work in progress)
ST-1A ... "Scrapper" stained and finished in linseed oil ... and with the "secret weapon"
GR-1SF ... "Rocker-billy" (just arrived, work in progress)
Haven't been here in a while. The project is still going but a whole lot of other things got in the way. Not in the least a death in the family. Stupid cancer!!
I am busy sanding, because I had a change of heart. After the flames went on, and we were busy clearcoating, my luthier buddy said that a few of his friends (as well as some of mine) asked why, this being the PINK guitar, the front wasn't really ... well pink. I has asked myself the the same question a few times. While certainly a nice finish, the flames over the ash, maybe it is a bit too subtle. After all we are trying to make a statement here. THINK PINK!
That combined with the fact that the veneer was giving me serious, serious grief, I decided to sand off the veneer completely. So I am in the middle of doing that. The back will have the same "mottled/marbled" pinks and silver finish, the front will be NEON pink with flames! Yeah!
Will send photos of the sanding in progress later.
