Thanks guys. The oil has come up so nice, but when it dries it dulls a bit, and as it's a finish that's set in the wood, near zero protection. Next step is some satin wipe on poly, maybe 2 coats for the body and she'll he sweet.

You can kind of see what I mean here. When it dries it loses the pop so the varnish should bring it back without going full gloss.

Yeah man. That's where the varnish comes in. The oil has left it glowing but when it was wet my god it popped. Watched a few videos last night of wood workers doing the same thing, Danish oil for colour and to feed the wood, then varnish to give a bit more protection and bring the sheen back.
Rookie alert! So sanding sealer blocks Danish oil from soaking in, who'd have thought. Back and sides fail! There was no sealer on the cap so she's safe. Took to it with a turps cloth and wiped all the sticky oil with half the stain off, cleaned up the binding and will restain tomorrow morning. But good news is the cap got its first coat of varnish, and it looked a zillion bucks. after it dried a bit and levelled out and soaked into the spalt caverns it lost a bit of sheen but I've seen a glimpse into the future, 2 coats away and it looks deeeeeeep! Also. 3 coats of naughtiness on the hs.

on the pics of the sand back i was like hmmm, but with the oil/varnish on, my god that cap is poppin...drool
Yeah I know what you mean. After every ten minutes of sanding I gave it a light wipe with a damp cloth to check progress and yeah, turned out alright. Less flame than the lp so it's a bit flatter and darker but I'm into it.
2nd coat of varnish on.
