Thread: Stuis LP jr

    I'm back!

It's been a while since my first build now, and although I hardly have time on my hands anymore running around after an 18 month old, I couldn't resist picking up one of the specials from the anniversary sale

I took delivery of a shiny new JR1 kit today. At first glance everything seemed to be ok, the body had a couple of glue spots, which doesn't really matter since this puppy is going to be painted white (apologies to DB, I know I'm committing a crime against tone).

My main concern is with the neck. On doing a quick mock build I noticed that the base of the neck isn't flat, and doesn't sit flush to the body. My first thought was to shave it down, but I'm afraid that if I do that it will result in a high action, or worse.

Is there a workaround or do I need a new neck sent out?

hey Stui, welcome back mate its been a while !
Probably best thing to do is clamp the neck in place and do a mock build with both E strings to see how string height is and whether it will be playable. I haven't built one of these maybe Gav T or someone else can share their experience with this kit. Maybe the neck is supposed to angle down which most G type axes do to compensate for the high TOM bridge. Maybe if you can please post some pics once you have done that

Tend to agree with wok. Looks like deliberate shape to me. My feeling if you shaved that neck butt to be square it could make the action too high. It all depends on the height of the bridge and relative angles. Made an LP 1 with set neck but can't recall neck butt being like that. It could have been though as it was a real snug fit. I would be reluctant to shave anything off the neck unless it is obvious it is not machined right.

Yeah, to me it doesn't seem to be machined right. It's actually flat at the back and then sort of has a curve to it. I would have assumed the whole section would need to be flat to get good contact to the body.

As it is, the neck just sort of rocks around in the neck pocket because it's just not flat.

I could be wrong but I would have thought the break angle would occur within the neck pocket of the body and the neck butt should be square and flat.
Not sure if doing a mockup with the neck in the state it is going to help you very much.
I'd be looking at getting the heel of the neck back flat but the luthiers on here could shed more light I'd say.

Looking at the heel and the neck it looks funky to me...
Flick an email to Adam so he can check it against one in stock, but my gut feeling is it is a Friday arvo post liquid lunch effort........

There is always a workaround for glitches, mistakes and other Guitar building gremlins.....

Yeah that was the impression I got too DB. I'll shoot Adam an email.

you're right Stui the neck should sit flat and certainly should not rock in the pocket.
