Andrew looks like the neck is angled up too much. Neck needs to tilt down a little where your's looks like its tilting up. Worry about getting the neck flat after you get the string action correct.
Yes try and get the neck pocket flat. The neck heel should be flat. Might need to sand off the drill holes

Thanks mate. I'll get the neck off tonight, take a few pics of the pocket and then another of it reinstalled and see where to go from there.
Actually I found this photo I took yesterday with the neck unshimmed. The bass side is waaaaay lower into the body than the treble.
yer try and level the neck pocket, you can always put a shim under if the neck is too low and strings too high. Some of these kits take some tweaking. This is the most important part of the guitars playability so take your time. Luckily its a bolt on so you can remove and re-tweak.
Don't modify the neck heel, that should be flat

Is the bass side too low or the treble too high. Maybe timber mate the pocket and flatten it when it dries? A bit out of my depth.
You can sort of see here the top right of the pocket is raised and the middle as a valley in it.
Put up a pic looking into the neck pocket from the other side, it's a bit hard to see from that angle.

I found another photo. Just under my thumb is the raised bit and where the 3 is, that's the dip.
In the second photo you can sort of see where the edge of the pocket kicks up on the right. I'll get a stack of better photos when I get home
