The bevel on the edges really adds some depth mate. I'm gonna have to pinch this idea.
It's a really effective look. Should look even better under a nice finish.
What was your weapon of choice for the carving?
your welcome to pop on round Stan, just give us a ring before to make sure I'm home.
Dan, I started off using a 45 bevel routing bit, then marked more areas to use the router till it was no longer able to safely do what I needed in the various depths and way points I had marked out, I then progressed to the angle grinder with a sanding disk and took it the other pre-marked steps, hence rounding out the straight bevels. I would have used my spoke shave if I could have found it in the shed under all the other crap being stored in there. The principle is the same as having a lot of templates of graduated sizes and then routing. The same sort of process could be roughed out with a wood rasp.

Beautiful work, AJ- it's coming up a treat!

got a bit more done now, the body is now drying waiting for the clear coats to go on. I used jarah stain, as the main , with a very slight feathering of mahogany around the edge blended back to the jarha. I then "de-gunked" the gold high lights leftover from my LP kit and did a smearing across the grain.
I've never used true oil before, but have a bottle in the shed, or I could go the clear lacquer method.. So what do you guys think.. true oil or clear coat?
Next item on the agenda is to De-fret the neck clean up the finger board and fix up around the nut area. Might even attack those oyster shells to have a go at making some fret markers from them.

and one shot with a bit of sun on it to highlight the goldish tint

nice work AJ, this is a piece of art, shape looks very cool, you are very brave freehand routing, too easy to bin the job ! Can't wait to see the finished product. Glad you squashed that fly !

That's a gorgeous grain that you've chosen.
Just beautiful AJ - nice job. Go Tru Oil - similar to Wudtone to apply and should give you a nice gloss. Darn - just checked into the naughty room again. Anyone know where the switch for the A/C is - it's getting a touch warm and stuffy in here.
