Ok, hey everyone, just started on my first build, thought I should contribute to the diary room and welcome any advice you guys might have...
I did a quick assemble and it all looked pretty good, though I had a few concerns about the rough routing on the body where the neck fits in...Also, felt like the neck wasn't fitting in as snugly as I hope it would, and wanted to drift off to the side a little bit... But Adam assured me that this is all pretty normal, so I decided to start on the paint job... see my next post...

Well, I started of by sanding both the neck and the body with some 240 sandpaper... wasn't really sure how hard or long to do it for, guess I'll find out soon enough.... Ended up applying the aged yellow base on the neck, really happy with how it has come up straight away...
Next I mixed the T-Bird white base coat with the turquoise and started applying that to the body, using the small circular motions and then wiping down the grain... Was quite surprised how thirsty the wood was. Some places took the paint quite well, but in a couple of spots it kinda refused to go on, so i suspect that there is a bit of glue on the surface... Think i might go over those areas pretty hard with sandpaper before the next coat... Any suggestion anyone?

can you please take a close up photo of the areas you suspect there is glue and post it Sav ?
Don't worry about the slack in the neck pocket, that is standard so there's enough movement to get the neck lined up nicely with the strings

Savs, I think you have broken DB's rule 101 on sanding.....

You really must resist the temptation to rush ahead with your project otherwise you wont get the result you are after and you may end up disappointed.

There are plenty of threads here about glue problems and how best to fix these. Unfortunately, since you have gone a little ahead, some of the issues you may well have to live with. Post the pictures as Wokka suggested, it may just be 'polished' spots which are easy to fix...

Its always a good idea to start with a slightly courser sand paper and move up to a fine paper. This is to remove scratches on the wood surface. If you start too fine as you have done, it is very likely that you will not have removed the deeper scratches and these will show up in your finish. Given that you have also picked up what appears to be a glue problem. this isn't easily solved by sanding....you need to check the thread on glue issues and how best to sort them out. You really need to have sorted these before painting the guitar. Once the first coat is on it is harder to match the depth of colour.

I hope you aren't too disappointed, but the prep work is critical to getting a great result.

Ok, thanks guys, here's some close up photo's of the problem areas... Bear in mind that this is after the second coat now... So any diagnosis and tips would be very helpful, I'm patient enough and want to get this right ;-) I guess i just watched the videos on applying wudtone and jumped in without really knowing how to spot potential problems, but I guess it's all part of the learning curve hey... Once again, your help is greatly appreciated!

Hey guys, I'm up to the wiring stage... now... um... which wire goes where??? Sorry to sound stupid, but I've never done any wiring before and have no idea where the wires are supposed to be soldered to. I've got yellow,brown,red and orange wires coming out of the tone and volume pots, and I am assuming the have to go over to the pickup selector... Also have a long black wire and a short black wire, I kinda am guessing the long one will be earth wire? Sorry, can't seem to fins any info on this anywhere, hate sounding like a total newbie, but thats what i am I guess ;-) Cheers!

Google Jazzmaster wiring diagrams & look @ images - there seem to be a heap online. Even ones with colour photos of what has been wired up to where.

okkaayyy then.... after a couple hours of research i am actually more confused than before... i think the part of my brain that is supposed to understand this may have been damaged a few years ago... Honestly i can'r see any way forward, think i may have to take this to the local music shop for advice... thanks though guys!
