My son is in the middle of building a guitar from scratch with my father - I'll be starting a thread on that in the near future. It's a HH guitar with a through neck - quite an ambitious attempt at a first build! They're about a year into it, working on-and-off, and he's hoping to be playing it on-stage at school music night in October.
I'm planning a build for the end of the year: a fretted DHB-4 with upgraded pups and bridge. I've got lots of questions for people with experience in building the DHB-4 and other through-body basses.
It's been fun to look through the gallery and some of the build diaries - getting some inspiration and (hopefully) learning what not to do!
Amazing to start with a completely-from-scratch project. Hope that it works as well for your son as it did for Brian May ;-)
I built a guitar from a kit with my daughter for a school project. Not quite as ambitious as your family projects. Nevertheless, it was a really great bonding experience. I love the idea of you building a bass to go with the guitar. My son plays a bit of drums and it's really fun to play together with the kids!
Will be looking forward to watching your projects develop. With the bass, you may want to start a build diary.
Most of the non-pitbull guitar builds do a diary here:
