McCreed has also talked quite a bit about his Stew Mac planer that works in a drill press. I don't think he even needs a jig, but if I were doing it with a router I would definitely build one. Every time I have tried to use a hand router without a jig it has been a mistake.
A planing jig is pretty simple. the router is attached to a plank that sits across two surfaces of the same height like a couple of pieces of rectangular aluminium extrusion. The spoil board bit is designed for planing the spoil board of a CNC router flat. There's a pic on page 2 of my mean gene thread.
