    Floyd Rose posts

In a fit of impulse buying, I purchased this little number: https://www.pitbullguitars.com/shop/...ic-guitar-kit/

My experience with Pitbull kits is that they stand up pretty nicely to hardware upgrades, so I decided to replace the licensed Floyd Rose bridge with a Gotoh GE1966T. The two bridges seem pretty similar in dimensions, so I don't think I will have issues with fitting the Gotoh.

The steel bushings supplied with the Gotoh are somewhat larger than those that came with the stock bridge, being both longer and wider in diameter. The width I can deal with.

However, if I drill out the existing post holes to the appropriate depth (30mm), this would leave only 6mm thickness of wood underneath the post (because the bridge is recessed and not surface mounted.)

Is this likely to be a problem? (In theory, I might expect the forces on the post to be mainly exerted perpendicular to the post, but in practice?)

    Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul, I think the depth is fine but your issue may be by widening the holes you lose some of the support in the timber for the pull on the posts. (Sure I’ve seen this on another build diary). Do the threaded posts for the gotoh fit in the supplied kit bushings? I know genuine Floyd do but not sure about gotoh. You may be able to use the inserts in the supplied bushes and avoid mods

Thanks for your ideas. I'm inclined to agree about losing material from drilling. There is not a lot there to begin with. The Gotoh studs have an M8 thread which is too large for the supplied studs, and original FR studs for that matter.

I don't know how well the supplied studs will last, but I found original FR inserts and studs at Stewmac (and not hideously priced). These are comparable in size to the supplied hardware, so I might grab a set and then I can make up my mind when I get under way with the build.
