    UK Customs being cheeky

Finally have my kit arriving tomorrow after paying the customs charge which I knew would be due. The only problem is they reassessed the value and looking at the VAT charge they seem to have decided my kit was worth more than I paid somehow. Does anyone have experience of making customs give back the difference? I know there is a form I can fill in but wanted any advice on if this is standard for them and if so how likely am I to get the difference back. It's principle more than anything.

Maybe PM Simon Barden. I think he has experience with stuff like this.

In Germany I had also to pay the custom charge. And not just for the value of the kit, but also for the costs of the shipment...if the kit is 150€ and the shipment 50€, you pay for 200€ (although I explained the product price and the shipment costs to the customs)...how can shipment raise the value of a product?...I feel being ripped off...If I am informed right this is some new rule in Germany/Europe...but don't know how it is about UK...

atm I am waiting for the last kit I ordered before the shop closed It is already in Germany and now I am curious how much money they will steal this time...

I took into account the shipping but they valued an extra 20 on top of that too which is what has annoyed me so much. I was meant to get it today but they took it back to the depot for no reason 😕 hoping it actually turns up on Friday as I'm excited by it all and also want the customs declaration to send to HMRC to make them give some back.

I hope you get it Hiltonsoft. That seems pretty anoying.

Alexej, I remember having to be very careful about how much my Christmas packages to Germany were so that they would not be assessed a tax. If shipping had factored in that would have ruined Christmas for sure. That must be a relatively new policy. Yikes!

The shipping cost to or from the US can be pretty shocking (at least to me). It was not too bad on the neck I just got. Actually considerably less than that last neck I got, I think because of the drop in the Australian dollar. Shipping was also quick this time since all the big hops were by air. Very glad not to have VAT to deal with.

I guess not much has changed since George Harrison was signing about it...
