I think you just into "my build diary", it should be listed up the top of this page, you have to start a fresh post under that listing. Look at the option for posting a new thread. Put in a name you want to go under and start the thread.
Ive chosen to make a couple of tools for the neck straightening and fret levelling, reasonably happy with the results, the 2 aluminium tubes are dead flat and I used double sided tape to adhere 240grit sandpaper and went ahead levelling the frets. Quite a few high ones, permanent marker and carefully watched after every sweep over the frets. The rockers I created from a smaller stainless steel ruler. So far so good, now just have round off and polish.
My next realisation, after restting the bridge once again, correcting the string alignment to the neck and still having issues with the center fret markers, thinking they were out of alignment to center, I realized it was the nut. Why I didn't check it firstly, I have no idea. The U bute bone nut, E is off course giving false readings. Just as well I had a spare one for my P bass, plastic, not what I wanted but at least now everything is where it should be, I will go to my trusted luthiers outlet and purchase another bone nut. GDI.
Ok so after much deliberation a bit of guess work and a few tips from fellow members I decided to go ahead and slot my first bone nut. As can been seen from the photos, ive gone in and slotted before shaping, I did this on purpose as I thought this would make it easier to shape once the strings were setup to height. I used the feeler gauge .004 for the 3rd fret to first fret height check, I know some want to take it lower at that point .0035 I think but ive settled on where they are at this point. Intonation is good, no fret buzzing so I think im clear there. I used a varied amount of files and blow pipe cleaners, the gauging is a little hit and miss but my pin file collection took care of getting the slot bottoms round to accept the strings, I angle the files so to try and get the angles to the tuners acceptable as well as keeping an eye on the face of the nut so to get the strings to sit above the frets at the feeler gauge depth. This is my first attempt at slotting and shaping a bone nut, seems to be ok at this point, I will fine tune my process and likely do another.
