Primarily the bit about setting the saddles halfway along the intonation screw setting when measuring scale length, mainly for the Tele Precision and Jazz bass style barrel and saddle bridges. Do that and you can sometimes end up with no room to move the saddles back far enough to intonate properly and with the springs on the intonation screws fully compressed. On barrel-style bridges, with yhe barrels far back, the intonation screws can be left poking up above the saddles, making it hard to palm mute.
They need to be set near the front of the adjustment screw, so there’s plenty of room to move them back without issues.
It’s been a few years now since I read it, but that’s the big one I remember.
But mainly it’s the important things it doesn't tell you than what it does that needs improving upon.
Thanks Simon, initially before I realized my errors setting the bridge, I had the saddles screwed back around 5mm from dead flat, then set the bridge, then reading up on the settings and having to refill the bridge holes and resest the bridge. I then wound out the barrels so that they all sat flat on the barrel face. It worked a treat the action of course is very low but with a bit of tweaking winding the E and A strings barrels back, mainly to get the fret buzz out and leaving the D and G strings sitting at the set point Im quite surprised with the intonation is very close. Of course Im still to do the fret filing and polishing but that will come when I prep the body for coloring, which Im still not sure about. Setting the pickups was a little fiddly with those springs and relying on the those for height adjustment I simply don't like, very rocky and unstable so I double sided taped high density foam, more like a rubber base under the pickups along with the springs and have steadied the pickups and has allowed a far better adjustment.
Looks like we have the pictures sorted, Thanks Simon. This is the second attempt at re setting the bridge and found squaring off from the bridge pocket the best way to go.
These are the tuners I had put aside for another bass guitar but have decided to use them on this one "Custom Eagle" mush stronger design than the kit type and are typically very close to the Fender elephant ear type tuners.
JBA 4 kit build so far, neck aligned to bridge. Strings tuned, very low action final bridge tuning to be completed, Im using Schaller strap locks on this girl.
Head stock to be cut in, I will do that when I dismantle for painting and/or painting. Basso strap was a nice find a lot cheaper than some of those Italian straps and the quality is very good, stars for a little bling. I have another P bass that was home made a number of years ago. next post.
