For a DIY black stain, this video might interest you:

I'm pretty sure other people have used this method in the past for their builds, but I can't tell you who.

You need tannin in the wood to get a good reaction with the mixture alone, which is why the application of the tea mixture first is recommended.

What it won't do is cover up any glue marks like the india ink would.

I think I'd be a little concerned about straining ALL of the steel wool filings out of the stain, although around the edges of the guitar may be OK. Steel wool filings can rust if they come in contact with water based finishes and the filings can also get into pickups. The outcome is nice, tho!

Ok so the kit has arrived a few days earlier than expected, thats a great start. All components have checked out, everything I ordered is in the kits, black everything as requested. The body seems to be very well made from initial look over. All edges are well rounded off on the this solid ash body. Will give it a damp wipe over and check for any glues that may have come into contact with, although I expect there shouldn't be any issues as its solid and not veneer. Neck looks nice, rosewood fretboard unsure of the timber used for the body of the neck. Eye viewing the neck it looks to have a slight bend peeking at the 7th fret, will use a straight edge for further checking and adjust the truss rod where required. In all, so far all seems good. I did try to upload the pictures but some reason isn't happening

Ebonizing, That looks to be the way I will go, lovely looking effect. Funny how all the stains in the world are available but this looks to be king, non expensive and excellent results, thanks for sharing this Simon. Now I have some direction.

Right. Time to start your build diary!

For the site to host photos, the photos need to be resized to be less than 1500 pixels on the longest side (and less than 1 meg file size, though that’s rarely an issue after resizing). Otherwise host elsewhere and link to the image (not the web page the photos are on). There needs to be a .jpg or .png at the end of the file name.

If you go to the main page of the forum, you will see several sections. The section the "welcome" threads (the one you are currently in) is under the "Pit Bull Guitars" umbrella of threads. Below that is another collection called "Pit Bull Guitars Exhibition Centre", and it is under that umbrella you will find "My Build Diary"
