That's entirely up to you and depends on what "look" you want to achieve.
Some do as few as 5 or 6, some do as many as 50!
I average about 24, but have gone as high as 30. Plus, I sometimes loose track (upper middle-aged brain) so I round down to the last coat I can remember and go from there.
