I also think it looks good. It is a bit unique by comparison to production guitar colours, but that's good thing in my book.

I was also surprised how the colour appeared to changed in the photo between looking at the thumbnail in the post and the larger opened image.
I can see the amber tone much much more in the larger pic, which makes me think it must even more so IRL.
Looking forward to seeing it all together and with a clear coat on there.

The photos so far have been taken on my phone under a fluorescent light so not ideal to get the best results.
Anyway, the neck and back of the headstock have had 3 coats of stains and 2 very thin coats of clear and the result feels silky smooth and looks like this





Incidentally, I have recently upgraded my bespoke, artisan, luthiery workshop (aka the loft) with the means to listen to music to a standard that has not previously been available.
So this evening I have spun some vinyl to accompany my endeavours and have listened to Kate Bush, Ian Dury and the Blockheads and Half Man Half Biscuit.

The moment of truth arrived to get some stain on the top.
I elected for Vintage Amber and I have to say after the first coat I was not impressed. It was a lot more brown than I had hoped and just generally rather dull looking.
However, second coat on tonight and things are looking up

I’m picturing the above in my mind with a clear coat over it and I’m drooling. Often the wood takes things in directions we didn’t anticipate; the results can be tragedy or triumph. I believe you have the latter. It might not be what you had in mind, but it is pretty special nonetheless. Nice job!

I've been plodding on with clear coats on the body and its getting there.
I thought I would have a go at veneering the headstock to be more in keeping with the top. This mostly went ok but I have managed to build in a couple of bits of 'character' along the way by chipping the edge in a couple of places.
Anyway, here's a mock up with the tuners, TRC and nut in place temporarily

Oh, forgot to mention the headstock 'overlay' which is two layers of veneer laminated together, cut out and stuck on. Could have been neater but again - 'character'

Can I just mention before I forget that the tuners normally go the other way up (i.e. you need to swap the sides they are on, so the shafts are above, rather than below, the posts.



It's been headstock issues holding up two of my builds. Not that easy to do well if you want to be that bit different, are they?

Well spotted on the tuners Simon They were only on there temporarily but you did prompt me to nervously open the gig bag containing my 12 string to check I had them the right way (fortunately I did!)

Right, I've done with clear coats and its not super shiny but got the sort of look that I like and I've taken off the masking from the binding.
As expected this hasn't been 100% successful but has drastically reduced the amount of scraping required so I'm very happy with that.

Really amazing grain on that. The cherry stain will be beautiful!!
