I wouldn't try too hard with trying to pop the fingerboard and concentrate of the body. But I'd see what you get first before making decisions. You may end up with a fairly plain neck with minimal figuring. Even if it was like the one in the kit photo, I'd be tempted to keep the main part of the neck plain, but maybe try some dark stain popping just on the headstock face.

At least it's solid wood so you can sand it down without fear of veneer break-through; though obviously you don't want to make the headstock too thin.
