    First Build - PRS 1S

    Hi everyone,

Second Build - my first pitbull.

The kit looks pretty good. Clean Binding, frets look well set. Drill holes in correct places.

I'm waiting on a replacement post for the bridge, which didn't fit.

The neck fits nicely, but the tail on the neck doesn't go through all the way. Don't know if that's normal.

Looks like some tear out on the fingerboard at 12th fret.

The hole from the switch to the pickup hasn't gone all the way through - wondered about how to drill that hole out anyway so good practice.

Most annoying, the top veneer doesn't seem to be centered, so the whole point of the veneer is lost! I've been considering carving the cutaway like a PRS and putting bevels in so maybe that decision has been made, but it seems a shame to have to remove all of the veneer.

I am building the same kit! It looks good.

Mine also has a big gap between the neck tail ant the pickup cavity. After gluing the neck, I have a gap around 5 - 6mm. My fingerboard is not perfect also in the higher frets, but I decided to leave it like this.

I was more lucky with the weneer, but mine is not perfectly centered also. The line between the veneers is 5mm off. Once you start painting or staining, the line is less visible. If you stain it, check for glue spots in that line: I had some little ones, but especially around the binding and some spots in the back of the body.

Good luck with the cutaway carving. I wanted to do it, but finally I didn't because I was afraid of that binding and the veneer. The veneer is less than 1mm thick, so I guess it's easy to break it. I am sure that with the right tools is possible!

    Cheers

Thanks Alexis. I've been following your build. I like the belly cut!

When I saw the off centre veneer I've been thinking about removing the whole thing and adding a bevel all around the front and back. I prefer a round edge on a guitar anyway. The issue is that the plate for the input goes a little bit over the binding, so if I remove the binding the plate is not going to fit. Gonna have to have a think. Maybe I can find a different input.

I cut out some back plates today. They are okay. The round one came out a bit oval so it might need a bit more work.

On a positive note, a package arrived from pb today with a straight edge and fret rocker so I can have a crack at doing a better set up of my previous build.

Suggest trying one of these....best to recess the whole thing. Worked a treat on my recently finished MMB4 where both front & back edges were seriously rounded over.

    Cheers, Waz

No turning back now. Removed the binding and started shaping the body. Just rough so far.

It is a shame about that veneer but I reckon you'll shape her up nicely.

We'll see how we go. I'm having fun at least. I'm doing it all with hand tools, so it's slow going.

Body rounded, filled and sanded. I think! Every time I look I find some more places to sand. And the wood is very soft so it's easy to ding.

I'm planning on brushing on the finish and doing a wipe on varnish. My finish was the big letdown on my last build, so I'm planning on doing plenty of testing before I go ahead on the real thing. I'm following the Martin Koch suggestions in Building Electric Guitars. We'll see how we go.

Don't know what colour I'm going for yet, but I have the green vintage kluson tuners so I need something that won't clash with the green.
