Scraping is the way to go.

When people ask me if they should mask the binding, I always refer them to YouTube, where I saw a Vid of a guy at the Gibson factory scraping back a bound guitar body. It was very satisfying to watch... you know what I mean.

I know I saw it... I didn't dream it, but I cannot find it again.
