The finish is now hard and a couple of days away from the final sand and polish. Today I took opportunity to correctly slot the nut and make a bridge.
BUMMER, I couldn't get the action low enough so after a bit of a think decided to mill timber off the surface the cone sits on and in turn drop the bridge.
This shows a witness mark of old cone level.
Almost done, hope to finish it this coming week.

Thanks F/W BUT what I haven't mentioned until now is the black is showing what I've been told is called "halo effect" BUM BUM BUM! After final sand and polish I'll make the call to leave and learn from the experience, or sand back and start again with paint and then poly. If I do I figure longer between coats, make sure there's no rain over the mountain and pick the warm part of the day.
Next week I'll decide :-(
Nice. I am a ways off resolving mine, but I have found a way forward with most of the conundra, but I will add the bridge height check to the list as well. Thanks for posting that.
