Fine, I see your reasoning. Yes, I was thinking that you'd want screws with decent sized heads to spread the load.

Does making your own bridge lend itself to making the plate more shaped like a squid or octopus's body?

I did try to make it look like an octopus head in some earlier mock-ups, but it just looked odd. If I had planned a bit better with the tentacles it might have been doable. I also tried a kind of medusa/Cluthu looking thing but again couldn’t make it work with the space available and the functional bits it needs. I’m thinking that there will need to be some kind of decorative engraving on it, but I’ll get it working first.

Ok well first rough go at it/proof of concept is done and I only wished I'd had it laser cut about 50 times. That said the 'hand made' look is part of the appeal of doing this. I think its going to work, fair bit of tidying up to do obviously.

I'm going to re-manufacture the upright bit, It;'s a bit rough. The holes are not quite in the right spot (or straight!) to allow the string through to work, but its pretty close. This is interference fit at the moment and its pretty secure, but I'll still braze the final piece in.

Take two, much better spacing, just needs a little bit of refinement and for the holes to be slightly lower. Some careful filing will take care of that.
