I'm guessing that either one of the solder lugs on the volume pot is shorting-out to the copper foil shielding, or, the bridge pickup is shorting-out to ground somewhere when you screw down the control plate, you can fix that by putting some electrical tape on the shielding, hope that helps.

Thanks Doc. Probably a dodgy earth wire somewhere and hopefully easy to find and fix.
