I put another coat of red on it last night. After sleeping on it I've decided I really don't like it. The straight black was just so much cooler.

It had also highlighted a couple of areas I hadn't sanded enough. So I'm going back over the whole thing with 240 and going straight black which I will clear over. The grain effect is really nice and it just seems to suit better IMO.

Next time I do a wood finish I'll go the dingo tone route as everyone seems to get such great results with it - and I'm not very experienced with wood finishing. Paint is so much more forgiving!

I'm also considering swiping the tuners and pickups from the Flying V build as that's been back-burnered for a little while.

Yeah I thought that looked great as well. Definitely filed away for a future build.

Bit of heart in the throat work as I confirmed the scale length and made sure the neck was nice and straight before glueing. It wasn't very tight fit in the pocket at all so, measure, re measure, glue, clamp, recheck. Hopefully all good.

Not sure how concerned I should be about this? There is an approx .5mm gap either side of the neck when in the correct position.....

That doesn't seem right for a set neck? I would have thought it should butt hard up against the neck, that's how it looked on my EXA-1 befroe and after I modified the neck tenon joint?

Hmmm. Yeah it doesn't seem ideal. As I noted above, it was pretty sloppy out of the box.

The shoegazer was similar, but finishing took the gap up. I'm thinking some epoxy or something injected in the gap might help. Maybe a shim out of some thin black material.

I'll wait until it's cured and recheck everything before I do anything permanent.

I've got exactly the same issue on the TL I'm putting together just now, the neck route is a shocker, and as I,m not using a pickguard its a PITA. I've filled the gap with pine timebermate, matches the basswood pretty well, maybe not the best option but it appears to do the job once filled and sanded.
