Thread: Tommy's JZ-1 Build

  1. #31
Hrm. Looks like there is no wiring diagram or instructions for the JZ-1.

    :/

Hoping the "2 humbuckers, 2 pots, and a 3 way switch" is close enough, heh.

Though I am not really clear on how the pickups mount to the body. Gonna try going through other build diaries and see if I can find one that has similar pickups.

Not sure on the wiring but the pickups mount to the scratch plate.

Not p-90s? not unless I have missed something pretty serious. I thought they were body-mounted like a Jaguar...

You totally didn't steal that colour from me! Its a classic colour for these guitars.

I'm guessing you screw the pickups directly into the body. On my washburn there is a bit of firm foam underneath them, but otherwise nothing fancy to mount them.

There are heaps of wiring diagrams online, if you get really stuck have a chat to Weirdbits, he is the forum guru.

I found just spending bit of time reading about how guitar wiring works makes it pretty easy to understand how it should go together. Its not anything mysterious or magical. The good thing about actually understanding whats going on rather than just following a diagram is it makes it a lot easier to trouble shoot if its not working properly.

    That’s really good advice.

I am pretty sure the 2 humbucker diagram is correct for this too, but I will do some research and be sure.

The Jag uses foam under its body-mounted pickups. Sometimes p-90s use springs apparently. I’ll have to look if there are springs in the kit. If not, mouse pads make great Jag pickup foam

I guess the two p-90s aren’t wired to hum-cancel when in the middle position. The two pickups seem the same, there is no clear “neck” or “bridge” pickup

Confirmed: there are springs for mounting the pickups to the body. Sweet.

    One may be reverse wound.

If you have a mutltimeter, check the resistance. Usually the higher resistance PUP is placed in the bridge position. This is because the the strings have less excursion there, so a higher output PUP is used in the bridge position.

Cool. I won't wire up the pickups till I have a chance to use my father in law's multimeter on them... Maybe I'll just wire up everything else...

I think I am gonna need to get some cream knobs. No idea why it came with white knobs even though the pickups and switch are cream.
