I bought all my electronics today. I just have to source something for the wire to rest on and for limiting the sideways traverse of the wire. Any suggestions for this?

I use two Jaycar purchased disc that I can set on the winder axis. I then feed the wire by hand.

These were a bit more bulky than I wanted, but I found a pair that whilst not brass, they were aluminium and were more disk like. they work very well.

Looks like the business Gav. Any idea what that Jaycar part was called? I can see tapped metal spacers but I don't think that is it..

hey mrcreed, it's called a "Aluminimum Hub with Set Screws" and can be bought at Jaycar in australia. I got mine online as my local store didnt stock them. I also used two more to create a guide for the wire:

I've been considering building a PU winder for a while.... I have some of the bits, still wondering if it is all worth turning those bits into a project

Some questions for you Gavin, and DB. How do you like the speed of the motor when doing winds? I saw elsewhere that you got a 1000 RPM motor. Is it a bit quick, or a little slow? By my calculations a wind of 10k turns at 1000RPM would take at least 10 minutes. Is that typical, or similar to the Stewmac box?

What speed do you usually use? And/or how long do you usually take to wind one coil?

Hi Marcel. I wish i found this thread sooner. I'll let the others answer your questions from a pro, but from a beginner POV, there's no way i could wind at full speed, it increases your chances of snapping the wire ten fold (which is cryworthy), takes about 30 - 40 mins to wind a single coil at a medium/slow speed

Main reason I ask is that I have what I thought was a reasonable 6mm shaft 12V motor but it max's out at 9000 RPM. So in theory when flat out it would complete the actual wind in one or two minutes, which seems now to be a very high risk motor to use. A maximum speed of 1000 RPM certainly seems to offer a much more reliable winding option. I might still use it and somehow include a max RPM limiter in the controller.

I have a 12V speed controller, a hall effect turns counter, and a hall effect RPM meter that I could include so I'm two thirds the way there. Bobbins and wire are still on the 'to get' list...
