Will give that a go for a few days and see how it works. It's winter here in Cape Town and was concerned that although the surface is dry to the touch maybe not dry enough to accept or lay down another coat. The layers are really thin and it feels like I put more on the small piece of cloth than on the guitar!

Yep, the spalted tops have dips and valleys, it's pretty much the nature of the timber.
Because the veneers are so thin, it's impossible to sand the ridges out, and I'm guessing the only way to get a truly flat surface would be to apply a thick poly coating etc.
Personally, I love the ridged and natural looking top on my LP, but everyone is different!

    Nearly done...

Hi all. It's been months... I have learned many many lessons and I am almost there.
    • Body and Neck Stained, 1 coat of shellack and over 20 coats Tru Oil with oil sanding with 800 grit every 6 coats or so.
    • Big divots on the spalted maple filled with CA glue as I went.
    • Frets levelled
    • Truss rod cover rosewood
    • Tried my hand at creating a bone nut
    • Wooden PU surrounds
    • Rosewood control plate

    Looking good.

Are you doing a larger veneer plate for the controls or is that bit yet to be cut down to the smaller rectangular size?

Will post pics later of the setup so far - the control plate is that size and shape gone with a very different look...
As to the finishing....All I can say is curses to badly molded metal bits, cheap binding, set necks in misaligned neck pockets (for novices like me)
    I live and learn......
