What a day, been what seems like hundreds of years since I last soldered so thought I would give it a go today, practiced on some other wire I have, jeez man, ended up melting the insulation, big blobs of the stuff or nothing at all. Took 5 and sat and watched the PB you tube vid, eventually got it near enough to have a proper go.

Yesterday I had mixed some filler in with a base coat as per Wudtones instructions, today went to give it a rub off with 400 sandpaper, then for some stupid reason I thought I would give it a go over with 0000 wire wool, stupid old git next wiped that over with a tack cloth round the sides only luckily enough, disaster!! Spent an hour trying to gently scrape the gunge from the sides till I hit on the idea of using the Evo stick adhesive remover I bought, yippee, worked pretty well thankfully. Got some slight damage in colouring now but nothing i can't live with, gives it a worn look...... so another base coat on tonight, last one i think before the clear coats go on. I'm only glad I haven't as yet done the front of the guitar or i would have been in a right mess. Felt like ringing the daughter up to come and give me a kick in the nuts wake my brain up, anyway lesson learnt, it won't happen again. On a plus side, the neck I am well pleased with, that too will be on a clear coat from tomorrow.

Steel wool is truly evil stuff and can quite often do more harm than good.

Definitely investigate them Chris, look at the pictures at the end if this thread http://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au...t=5318&page=20
You can see the shine they bring up especially around the cutaways. That body has absolutely no finish on it, I have just used the micro mesh on the raw timber and has come up incredibly smooth and polished.

Just this minute ordered some mate, yesterday I also ordered myself a Strat to build, wire wool ain't going anywhere near that, after the Strat the second LP will be done I already have..... Wudtone reccomend a 250 grade sandpaper before using it, I will do that then from that point forward the micromesh pads.

Dye done, build up of top coats now, first one done, not that happy with how uneven the spalt is but didn't dare risk sanding it, it's only the bottom edges so hopefully the top coats will diffuse it a bit..

The back and sides were supposed to be the same but in my rush put the wrong coat on first so turned out more orangey brown, which to be honest I am happy with...the top was done right...
