Hi Kick, that is looking so much better now.

Just wondering if you were using full strength black stamp pad ink as I reckon it should almost cover the last bits around the bottom edge behind the control knob section. For the vertical glue join line maybe use a very fine paint brush to delicately brush into that line a full strength dose of the red mixture. Being water based hopefully that allows you the opportunity to wipe off any unwanted excess.

Chris & Waz; I did brush it with full strength black ink and it seems to be completely covered. I'll try to do the same on the veneer join but I feel a bit uncertain about the effect. I do not want to see a clear paintbrush stroke.

I only have time next weekend to continue so please be patient

Hi Kick, fully understand about a solid brush line however if it works in concealing the join line you could then rag on a bit more red through the center to blend the quilted swirl effect back into the mix.

I'll give it a try and start on the join where the bridge and tailpiece are placed to see how it works out.

Kick mate i see what everyone is saying, if it was me i would clear it with 3 or 4 coats then use a black on glue if needed that way you will protect the lovely quilt top and gives you a bit of wiggle room, if you dont like the black and doing the edge with a rattle can can be a real pain in the ass with over spray and can sand off over spray with a bit of 2000w&d the center line not sure what you can do there as the red dye wont soak up so you need to put the red dye with a small brush and not wiping it off as WAZ said. Think you have done a excellent job on the dye and ink and will look amazing when its cleared

Ok, made a little progress today; The rim is now fully black I still must find me a very small artist painter brush to attack the veneer join with black/reddish and or reddish/black.

But I did a burst in red and black on the headstock and I think it looks great. Pictures will follow but I only did one coat so after a few more I'll make some pictures.

I'm also looking for some red plastic because I want to make my own trusrod cover. My idea is to give that cover a bit of the same shape the headstock is. But where to find some plastic which has the same thickness as the stock cover and which is also strong enough to use a file on it to create the shape (is 'file' the correct word?)

Ok, little update.

I stained the headstock so it would look similar to the body. I did some more layers but I feel I need to do some more. Anyway, the topic is worthless without pics!





As you can see the grain is hard to fill with the stain and perhaps I should have been better off using a filler. Well, add this to the list 'Lessons learned'

I kinda like it
