You can sand down a fair bit before breaking through - though there's no indication that it's going to happen, it just does. Went though the veneer on my ES-3 when sanding down trying to remove my abortive 1st sunburst. Luckily it was in an area where there was a lot of dark tobacco going, so it wouldn't be noticeable.

Thanks but I'm just not comfortable with my sanding as I have been a bit aggressive. Have a look at my first build and you will see what I mean. This veneer especially near the pickups looks thinner than a piece of paper. What page number shows this on your ES-3 build?
