Thread: Bobby's First build JR-1M

    Bobby's First build JR-1M

    Evening All,

I've just put my order in for a Single Cut Jr kit in Mahogany. I'm pretty excited as this is my first kit and my first new guitar for about 10 years (I've downsized rather than get more, until now!). As this is my first go at this I've optioned for Dingobass to set up the neck. I'll try to do everything else myself.

So far the plan is to get the body and neck sanded and maybe finished (at very least sealed), then get through hosting Christmas this year and finally put it all together in the time off after Christmas.

As far as upgrades go; I've already ordered with the kit upgraded tuners and bone nut. I'm also looking into upgrading the pots, input and lastly a new p90. Not sure of what p90 to get yet though.

As for grand plan for how I want the guitar to look; these are my current inspirations:

I really like the wood and tortoise shell pick guard look of the strat. I realise that the body won't be 1 piece like a few of those guitars and also note that it is possible that the body I get just won't look good like that due to wood/grain. But, I got my fingers crossed.

Anyway, excited to get started and will be waiting anxiously for the kit to arrive.

Hi and good luck with the build. Don't forget that you could dye the body a little darker or lighter and still be able to see the grain. You don't see that many guitars that are left a 100% natural mahogany colour.

I've got the sandpaper and TO coming with the kit. I want to see how the wood looks before deciding whether to just TO it or stain it as well.

no worries Bobby, I think mahogany can look great in it's natural colour. See how the grain and colour look when it arrives

Yes, it's deceptively easy to get out of your depth early in your first build.....
