A lot of the above can be scaled up for studios and mixing rooms, where room sizes mean that bass-end standing waves predominate. 'bass trapping' is very much required to get anything near an even response. Also within a room, as well as getting louder notes, standing wave null points become an issue as well, as if you are in the wrong position, notes can simply disappear! So thick rockwool/mineral wool or glass fibre panels are used to help absorb the bass end - these are especially effective in corners.

The open-cell foam panels you often see in studio pictures are effective at taming higher frequency sounds - those with regular pyramid patterns are also part-diffusers (for reducing direct reflections form walls). But they need to be at least 7.5cm thick before they start to have any effect on the bass end. Again, setting them off the wall helps them be more effective.

Yes, open backed cabs disperse the sound over a wider area, whilst closed back ones, especially 4x12"s, can be rather 'beamy'. On any multiple speaker cab with speakers close together, you start to get into speaker coupling - that makes them more efficient - which is why a 4x12" is louder than a 1x12" using the same speakers and with the same signal going through it. You are also starting to get into the sound wave interference effects that make line array PAs so effective at controlling the spread of sound - wide horizontal angle to cover the audience but narrow vertical spread so you don't get any primary reflections from the roof or floor to muddy the sound. So the sound output from a 4x12" will always be a lot more directional than a closed-back 1x12", which in turn is more directional than an open-backed 1x12".

thanks Simon. I guess that explains why a lot of modern little computer speakers and home theatre speakers are spheres and triangles. It's funny my office/mancave has a an angled ceiling, walls insulated with 2inches of wool behind the wall panels; carpet, lots of books and lots of furnishing and for some time I had a cheap little 2.1 system hooked up to my computer yet people would look around and say "Man what system are running here? it sounds amazing". I recently replaced it with a 5.1 and think the old 2.1 was better. Anyway I put the Celestion green speaker in the new little cab and it actually sounds better than it did in the bigger cab. So I then put the Jensen in it (yea, 33C outside I can find things to do INSIDE) , it sounded better in the big cab. So I had right first time. When the weather cools off enough that I can paint things without my sweat dripping on it I'll get it finished.

It's around 8°C here, rather too cold to work outside (unless it's hard manual labour) plus it's raining on and off, so it's definitely working inside weather for me as well!

It's often an art, more than a science, to matching speakers to cabs. You've got your speaker Thiele-Small parameters, which help when designing Hi-Fi and PA cabs, and also maximising low-end output and extension on bass cabs, but they are not the be-all and end all for getting a guitar cabto sound 'interesting' rather than give the flattest response. A lot of it is still trial and error, and trying to remember just what the previous speaker sounded like when swapping them around!

And yes, your listening environment plays a big part as to how hi-fi and other speakers sound. Also amazing how some h-fi audiophiles spend huge amounts(say >$50k) on the biggest and best system they can afford, them stick them in an ordinary room with no acoustic treatment, or a minimalist room with loads of bare reflective surfaces when a much cheaper system would sound better with say $2k of acoustic treatment. But your mancave sounds like it's a good acoustic environment.

Here's hoping for some cooler weather for you and progress!

Hey Dedman, how hot was it today? Official weather site for my neck of the woods reckoned 28 degrees but around midday an app on my phone was showing 32 degrees and with what felt like plenty of humidity too. Still 24 degrees and 83% humidity and about to go for a walk in the cool evening with next to no breeze at all.

it was hot today but still managed to sand and polish, then fit out my 1 x12 open back. . It has a Celestion Greenback inside 8ohm 25w. The speaker itself was originally in the big closed back box, but I replaced that with a Jensen Falcon 50w

Funny thing Zandit, I'm currently working on my FIRST gloss black guitar LOL

Wokka, it can plug into either my beheaded Vox VTX20 or Orange Micro Terror. It's just car acrylic, the last top coat before the clear has some blue pearl mixed into the burgundy metallic so it really shines.

Sounds good, not as good as the Jensen but I havent had time to fiddle tones yet
