Hi Simon, Steven Slate modelled a variety of mics, but owners who have the Slate modelling system, also have some of the original mics of the same type as the brand and mic that were used at the time the modelling took place. And they sound vastly different from the models, and even though Stevens achieved amazing results. Unless you have the exact microphones that Steven modelled you can only approximate. Even three original mics of the same type and make sounded vastly different to each other. So capturing one mic won't give you the same sound of them all.The new tube mic models he's releasing soon are certainly something to look forward too. Would I buy a Steven Slate microphone system. Yeah I think so because of the variety and for approx $1700.00 dollars US you get access to a mic collection no one could possibly afford or even buy now. There is a system made by Townsend Labs that people are raving about as it goes one step further than the slate system called the Sphere check it out here http://www.pro-tools-expert.com/home...hnology-sphere. More info here http://www.pro-tools-expert.com/home...studios-london There's also a an unbiased review here https://youtu.be/DlFGW4E_1NU

I have a few mics I've had modded by Michael Joly http://www.oktavamodshop.com excellent sound are they as good as the originals, they've been made to sound like hard to say. But amazing difference to how they sounded stock. I've also love the mics I've built and modded from http://microphone-parts.com/. Have sounded great but it's so important too match the capsule to the type of voice that your recording.

    Currently I have mics with
u87 sound on rode NT1 with K47 capsule and electronics mod. Michael Joly
Neumann Km 84 Octavia mic Michael Joly.
Rk 12 capsule and mic mod from microphone-parts
    Ribbon mic I built

Need a k47 capsule for Se Electronics sEX 1 microphone

Plus I have Beezneez,Neumann,Blue Spark mics too.

It's weird sometimes I'll put my Neumann or Beezneez mic in front of someone that has an amazing voice and it just doesn't suit the style,or even sound like the voice your hearing in the room . So then the search begins to find the mic that best suits it. So do try different mics to find the one that pulls out the qualities In the voice that your recording.
Simon check out Microphone-parts kits and complete mics I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Even if you don't like modding they have some fantastic ready to go mics.
    Best Wishes
    Kimball
