Led Zep is also one of my favourites as are many other British 60's & 70's bands such as Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Bad Company and the list goes on. These days I am really into Slash with Miles Kennedy singing. Every song on the World's on Fire album is a guitar lesson. If only I could keep up and be anywhere near as good would make me very happy indeed.

So she's finally here and I'm as excited as a school girl. Unfortunately the grain isn't good enough to warrant a stain job so I'm gonna go for the full paint and see how she works. I suppose from reading on here this is were the sanding fun begins hahaha

I just did one in full paint. The biggest advice I can give you is to use a good sealer that fills the grain. I used drywall mud, and got great results. It's messy to sand, but gives a nice clean even surface that paint adheres to well. Good luck!

I bought timbermate wood filler as I've seen a lot of other people on here use this brand. Hopefully that will do the job and seal er up if not then I guess there will be a lot of primer coats hahaha

How did you paint job turn out! I'm curious because from what I've seen most people do a stain finish. Something about a nice solid coloured strat you can't beat in my eyes

Timber mate should work quite well. Dig some out of the pot into another container and add a small amount of water until it becomes a slurry and then wipe all over with a squeegee or use an old credit card instead. It has a very distinct plastic smell and sanding back should be done outdoors with at least a face mask on as it is very messy and you don't want to inhale any of that sanding dust.

Rush what colour Timbermate have you got ? If you use ebony (the darkest) you may find it will pop the ash grain nicely. The photo's of the kit are so tiny I can't really see the ash grain

    Little known fact.
Outside of the UK, Fiesta Red is hardly ever seen on original vintage Strats.
Reason is the popularity of the Shadows Hank Marvin's Red Strat at the time.....most Fender Strats leaving the USA at the time were originally sunbursts, then refinished / over sprayed, in the U.K by Fenders U.K distributor, to the much wanted Fiesta Red.

See Norman's rare guitar video with Joe Monabassa's 1965 Fiesta Red Strat explain this.

They do seem to have a lot of them here in Aus/NZ, I suppose that's because of the large shift of UK residents to Aus/NZ during the 60's & 70's

Hmmmm... if you use an solvent based stain and it doesn't pop like you want it to, then you're quite able to sand it back, seal it and paint over the top for a colour finish.

Yep; a strong coating of black to pop the grain, sand back lightly and then over the top with whatever colour(s) you want. I use Feast and Watson stains because they are as vivid as all hell.... I was lucky enough to buy a local paint shops entire inventory of the coloured stains - green, blue, red and black - because they were going out of that particular line; I've used the green and the blue with beautiful results but I've not found a suitable project for a red stain!!
