Hey Storm you don't really need to grain fill the veneer, give it a light sand starting 240 then 320 grit and that should be enough to put your orange stain on. Just be super careful not to oversand as the veneers are very easy to sand through, especially on the edges

OK, thanks so much Wokka and FrankenWashie for the advice on the veneer! (I'll look at it when i get home/ was under the impression it was a solid piece a few mm on the top).

Now ive got direction for what I need to do I can properly get started! Cheers guys

no worries Storm, have a look into the pickup cavities and you should get an idea how thick the veneer is, should be basswood below it.

From the top to the black line measures 2mm (0.2cm). Either way, ill still be gentle with the sanding

Hi Storm I would presume the 2mm is a thin veneer glued to basswood. I haven't heard of a veneer from the factory thicker than 1mm so go easy on the sanding in case !

haha doubt it Frankie, have you priced a 2mm thick flame maple veneer to suit the size of an ES ?

Yeah, I looked at some maple capping from anagote timbers, a small a grade set at about a 1/4 thick, 300 bucks or thereabouts. I ditched that idea and decided to just go with a solid body

Hi Storm, eager to see how your orange axe comes together.

On the EX-5 I found DT OS was quite dark on its own hence why I added CG to get a brighter shade. Bushfire Sunrise looks pretty good if you don't want to muck around mixing things up all the time.

Should also mention that DT shades of CG differed from one batch used on the EX-5 to the next that was used on the EX-1 which came out more caramel than the bright yellow in the 1st batch and was more the colour I was after anyway.
