Ah, ok, I get it now. I watched some videos and it looks like there it more sanding involved than I thought so that could be an issue with a thin veneer.

A darker coat first up to soak in deep then lighter over the top sounds like it should do the job.

That's the plan but still need to wipe off as much excess whilst wet otherwise it will remain very dark once fully dried.
