Colour

Ok I'm having some difficulties with my tests on pine for the burst. I have deliberately tried products that are not Dingotone or Colortone dyes. I love Dingotone. don't get me wrong. but I want this finish in acrylic and I can't bear to put that over DT.

I'm considering either a sunburst (preferable) or a blue burst. Ebony timbermate will be the filler. (I'm going to have to spray the edges of the body in black enamel to hide the Jack plate hole fix).

This is my (third) poor attempt at using F&W prooftint. This is black, Walnut, red stamp pad ink and golden teak. Prior to that I've tried black, Walnut, Mahogany and golden teak and the same with a bit of cedar)
Two things I'm not liking
1. The F&W colours (although preferable) just don't seem to blend with each other well.
2. The stains just don't seem to pop with any lusture.

The blue burst is simply two coats of blue and black stamp pad refill ink. Contrary to F&W they blend very well and the blue has a great lustre.



Any hints tips, thoughts etc are appreciated.

have you tried spraying the F&W colours? Might be easier to get a blend. Air brush isn't very expensive and you can run them off canned air or even pump your cars spare tire up to 100psi and run it off that if you don't have a compressor.

G'day Andy, looks like the F & W will be too hard and therefore blueburst might be the way to go. You could probably start with black moving through blue/black to blue.

On my Tele I used inkjet ink and on the J Bass mixed colortone with fountain pen ink as the colortone products are just way too dull for my liking.

When looking into fountain pen ink there were more shades of blue than any other colour and maybe worth a try as they too are more vibrant than stamp pad refill inks.

@dedman. Thats a good point. I hadn't thought about spraying.

@ Waz. Intersting you say that about colortone. I thought about ordering them but postage from Stewmac is expensive.

I have an opposite perspective on colortone, i got some beautiful cherry colours out of it, which i am using on my 12stringer, will i use it again? yes i got heaps left over lol.

Maybe the Color Tone bought through DIY closing down had been watered down or something as it came out very flat for both the Cherry Red and Mahogany on a scrap pine ply test. In fact food red colouring had more life in it for the same colour test.

Hey Andy, if you want Color Tone Mahogany I have 2 unused small bottles that will never be used. Came out very dull dirty brown and not anywhere near what I expected. Also have some bottles of DT MkI final coat and one bottle of neck finish available if you want them too. Not sure about shelf like for unopened bottles of DT products though as some of that stuff arrived between August & November last year.

That might be Waz, because he repackaged it, so maybe added a few drops of water to it.

A few drops, yeah. The 'colortone' I got from DIY was watered down to the point it was basically just blue water.

Not good mate, i go 2/3 water to 1/3 ColorTone to get what i was after and the bottles are undiluted 2 Fl Oz, i have used not even a 1/4 bottle each of the Cherry and the Red Mahogany to do the whole 12 string, so i have used 15ml even a bit less.
