The first link is to a humbucker/single coil diagram. When the pot is 'down' the pickup acts as a normal humbucker, when it's 'up' it cuts out one of the coils so you just have a single coil active (half the pickup).Originally Posted by Muzza
The second link is to a series/parallel diagram. A humbucker is normally wired in series, so the signal goes through one coil and then through the other, which cuts out the hum and gives it the traditional warm fat humbucker sound. When the pot is 'down' the coils are in this series configuration. But, in this second diagram, when the pot is 'up' it links the coils in parallel instead (the hot from each coil is linked and the ground from each coil is linked. This still cuts out the hum but gives a completely different sound, more scooped and thin, with a little less volume.
If you want to see which configuration your BB1200 has, just plug it in at low volume and with the pot 'down' gently tap the pup's pole pieces with a screwdriver, then repeat with the pot 'up'. You'll hear the tap if the coil is 'on'. If only one coil is active when 'up', it's humbucker/single coil, if both coils are active when 'up' it's probably series/parallel.
