Thanks Fretworn, that's some great advice. So the next steps for me is to:
- Sand to prepare for "burst" effect
- Add the darker outlines to get the "burst" effect
- Sand and prepare for the intensifying coat
- Sand the beading until I get rid of any marks
- Sand with the 0000 steel wool including the beading so that the beading is smooth
- Sand again
- Intensifying coat
- Sand with 0000 again if necessary
- Finishing coat
